About the Exhibition

A free photo exhibition for all ages

Relief in Sight: Australia’s International Disaster Response in Pictures is a moving new photographic exhibition that opens a window on Australia's international disaster response to the Asia-Pacific region. It puts a human face on the suffering, and the compassionate response of our nation to save lives.

Sixty-eight compelling and confronting photographs capture the impact of natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies in our region. The exhibition highlights the crucial role of Australian aid workers and volunteers in the initial response and longer term rebuilding process. It also offers an insight into the reaction of affected communities following disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami and Pakistan earthquake.

Relief in Sight was developed with the help of AusAID's relief partners as well as professional photographers. The exhibition includes a series of images of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami by award-winning Australian photographers Stephen Dupont and Rob Maccoll.

The exhibition also offers an insight into the principals and practices that guide Australia’s response to humanitarian emergencies through a series of domestic and international partnerships. The Australian government is a leader in providing humanitarian and emergency services and is often the first to respond when a natural disaster or crisis strikes our region. Over the past five years it has responded to more than 60 emergencies in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

Relief in Sight is an Australian Government, AusAID, initiative that aims to raise awareness and understanding of the work carried out on behalf of all Australians to assist with humanitarian crises in our region. The free exhibition is currently touring Australia and will visit more than 60 cities and towns during 2007-08.
